It has been a long time coming – a new FPS with throwbacks to old titles like Quake, Unreal Tournament and Tribes. The developers have tipped their hats to these franchises when discussing the 2014 release of Titanfall, stating that they have been influenced by the speed and smootheness of movement in old FPS.
One interesting point is that there will be “bots”, computer controlled players in the game, all the time. These “players” will not really affect the course of a round, they are there to allow real players to level up and get their “titan” – or mech in normal speak. This is reminiscent of MOBA games like DOTA where creeps are used for leveling up and little else. Initially this idea sounds stupid from an FPS perspective, however when you think about old titles that use item pickups (weapons/armour/health) this is not that much different.
Well it is but the AI players are essentially item pick ups.
Respawn, the developer seem to be keen on players not dying as often as say, COD. It will be interesting to see how this pans out as it may simply allow better players to never die and have too many “get out of jail free” cards.
Regardless the title is promising looking and by all reports it will be a breath of fresh air in a stale genre.
